The Club Racer Kit for Sunfish: mainsheet blocks, cleats and control lines
A rebuilt mainsheet system and adjustable control lines, for sailors who have started racing. The Club Racer Kit replaces the mainsheet and its blocks with ball bearing Harken and Ronstan hardware, and gives you the cleats, fairlead and fittings to lead your outhaul and cunningham back to where you sit.
What's in the kit
Mainsheet
- Robline tapered mainsheet (MT-OPTI). 7m (23 ft) of Dyneema and polyester line, 9mm in the middle where you hold it and 6mm at the ends where it runs through the blocks.
- Harken 40mm Carbo block with swivel and becket (2637). The block you trim from. Takes line up to 10mm, so the full width of the tapered sheet runs through it, and the swivel lets it turn to face you.
- Ronstan Series 30 ball bearing Orbit block, lashing head (RF35101). Takes line up to 8mm and lashes on with line instead of a shackle.
Control lines
- Harken 22mm Micro block with becket (225). Takes line up to 6mm. The becket lets you rig a 2:1 purchase on the outhaul or cunningham.
- Ronstan V-Cleats, small, open (RF5100) (x2). For 3 to 6mm line. Pull the line into the V to hold it, flick it up to let go.
- Ronstan stainless lined fairlead, 8.5mm (5/16 in) ID (PNP121). Leads a line through the deck or around a corner without chafe.
- Wichard eye straps, 3/16 in (x2) and 5/32 in (x2). Stainless anchor points for blocks and line ends.
- Ronstan snap shackle, 32mm (RF6080). Clips the mainsheet to the bridle the way a new boat ships, so the sheet comes off in a second at the ramp.
- Barton 4mm rope stoppers, black, pair. Stop a line end from running back through a fitting.
Sail trim and spares
- Davis Air-Flow telltales, set of 14 (950). Ripstop nylon telltales (7 red, 7 green) on adhesive discs, so there is nothing to sew or punch through the sail.
- Ronstan nylon horn cleat, 76mm (RF520).
- Schaefer Little Hawk MK1 wind indicator (H003F00). A masthead vane: shows where the wind is coming from, up where the sail is working.
- BoatLIFE Liquid Life-Calk sealant, 2.8 oz (1052). For bedding every cleat, fairlead and eye strap you screw into the deck.
Line for the control lines is not included. The V-cleats take 3 to 6mm line, so use what you have or buy it by the foot locally.
Who it's for
- Sailors who have started club racing and want to adjust the outhaul and cunningham while sailing.
- Owners rebuilding a mainsheet system that has worn or seized blocks.
Fitting it
The blocks and mainsheet go on with the fittings already on your boat. The cleats, fairlead and eye straps mount with screws, so plan where your lines will run, then drill and bed each fitting in the sealant that comes in the kit. Allow an afternoon.
Which Sunfish it fits
Any year with the lateen rig. The blocks, cleats and fittings mount on the deck and the boom, and nothing in the kit touches the rudder hardware, the bailer or the drain plug, the parts that changed over the years.
- Control lines. You choose where the cleats and fairlead go, so they suit an older boat that never had an adjustable outhaul or cunningham as well as a new one. Plan on drilling new holes.
- Mainsheet length. The tapered sheet is 23 ft, two feet shorter than the standard Sunfish sheet. That's enough for the stock rig.
Racing at class events? The Podium Kit adds a ratchet mainsheet block, carbon cam cleats and a telescopic tiller extension.
